Richard used to play in a band calles 'The Howtoplays':

The Howtoplays are a four man band from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Since 1995 they wrote over a hundred songs, which have been collected on the "HTP Anthology".
Driving force behind this avalanche of pop songs is Richard Niessen.
The lack of any formal musical training results in fresh songs with many musical surprises,
both for the band and the audience. Although most songs arrive as rough sketches,
they are quickly whipped into shape by Pieter Kik, Erik Verkoyen, and Toon Oomen.
Pieter likes to run all the way up the fretboard ("your bass player plays only soprano notes!"),
Erik categorically refuses to play normal chords ("One day I'll learn to play the piano!") and
Toon applies all his divine powers to the drum set ("and then I'll give a REALLY long fill!!")
